BBQ Tips It's Getting Close to that time of the Year!!!

BBQ Cooking Tips should help your BBQ be an enjoyable and safe one.Yes!!!!! My favorite type of cooking, grilling and barbequing on the Charbroil with the charcoal, mesquite chips and our favorite meats. You’ve heard the stories about I went to Uncle Bob’s barbeque party and I’m sicker than a dog. Here are a couple of grilling tips to keep your BBQ a positive memory.

BBQ Cooking Tips

Marinating your food gives it that great taste, texture, and personal touch when grilling. A lot of recipes state to marinate your meat and poultry for tenderizing or flavor. This is great for “Select” grade meats which don’t have a lot of fat for tenderizing. One of the most important grilling tips is to always marinate your meats in the refrigerator. Make sure not to use the marinate from the raw meat or poultry on cooked food unless it is boiled to destroy any bacteria.

Cookouts or picnics away from home need to be given special attention because it isn’t as if you are running back and forth to the refrigerator, you need to keep your perishables and meats at a certain temperature. When carrying food to a picnic site, make sure food is kept cold to minimize bacteria growth. Place raw meat packages in plastic bags and store separately from canned drinks and ready to eat foods.

Make sure to use an insulated cooler with ice or ice packs to keep the food 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below. If possible transport the cooler in the air conditioned area of your vehicle and when you get to your location put the cooler in the shade. We know how much the kids like soda and juice although we end up throwing away half full cans of juice (can't stand it), however you want to make sure that these items are stored separate from your meats and perishable items as the cooler would seem like your refrigerator on a hot summer day (open and close). You also don’t want any cross contamination of foods. When handling meats only take what you are cooking on the grill out of the cooler.

Make sure you pack clean sponges, cloths, baby wipes for cleaning surfaces and hands. I normally carry 2 gallons of soapy water for everyone to use before preparing their plate or assisting me with cooking. This is especially good for the kids who honestly don’t care they just want a hot dog or hamburger right now. Make sure you have enough separate utensils for cooking and serving as bacteria present in raw meat or juices can contaminate the safely cooked meat.

After the cookout it is suggested that you throw away any meat which has been cooked after 2 hours ago, if you have In-Laws like I have you don’t have to worry about this.
Keep It Safe as we know that the kids are always around having fun, make sure they are not playing around the grill and I tend not to let kids serve themselves around food. Hands must be washed before being served.

The most important thing is to have fun and make sure you use some of our grilling tips and make sure your event is the most memorable of the year that’s always my goal.

Food Coupons and Retail Coupons Help Save You Money

It’s good to keep your food fresher longer, but using food coupons is just as good to get your food cheaper . It was a time that we would just go to the supermarket and catch a couple of sales with no food shopping coupons. I don’t know if we have gotten smarter or if the cost of living makes us shop differently but know we don’t shop without our grocery discounts.

It’s a wonderful thing when the cash register at the supermarket shows $84.27 and after food coupons $62.84. Compared to a true savings expert these savings are small. An example would be my niece she has actually had a grocery cashier give her money back. That's what I'm talkin about.

Now couponing has developed from a hobby to an exact science of savings. There are hundreds probably thousands of websites that not only provide you with food discounts, but also for retail stores, electronics distributors and much more just print coupons online.

I’ve received considerable discounts just by searching for internet discount codes from particular stores or manufacturers and . An example would be last Christmas 06 my son wanted an XBOX 360 premium console it is a standard $399, I was able to find a Computer Retailer that had a $100 rebate, on an item that usually does not have any discount whatsoever.

I actually found the above discount after searching the internet for about 30 minutes, this search was definitely worth my time. You don’t have to worry about this because I’m going to give you a headstart.

You will find a number of internet coupons for major retailers online. My co-workers and I always let each other know about major discounts and even freebies for items located in major department stores or restaurants in our area.
Everyone knows the most common ways to get food coupons and retail coupons or accumulate them we just want to give you some more coupon tips.
1) Call manufacturers' 800 numbers (often found on the packages of your favorite products) to request coupons. Up to 35% of manufacturers only send coupons upon request.

2) Make food coupon-clipping a family affair--it's a great math and savings lesson for the kids. You can involve them in the process and let them 'earn' the coupon savings in lieu of an allowance.

3) Plan your families' menu using food coupons

4) Use coupons in conjunction with loyalty/frequent shopper cards from your local retailers.

5) Print coupons online, this is so easy and there is a vast amount of information on the internet.

Hopefully, these tips will help you, if you are interested in the history of coupons please visit

Credit Card Debt How does it feel to be in the Drivers Seat

So you're asking yourself "how can a phone call benefit you and your family"? Well let's try to answer this question, let's look at it this way if you were a credit card company and you charged a 12,15,19 percent interest rate or more on credit card or personal loans you would definitely be making a killing.

This is what credit card, personal loan, and home equity companies have done for years, basically legal loan sharks and were living high on the hog.

Now with the current economy a lot of these loans are not being repaid on time or they are in default, there was news that one personal loan/credit card company lost 60 million dollars in unpaid loans.

Now that is where we benefit for a change. Just think if you were one of these companies, would you want the loan to be repaid at a lower interest rate or have your company collectors or outside collection agencies run around in circles trying to get the high intrest rate payment?

Let me tell you a personal story, I was in a desperate financial situation, where I had a number of bills that needed to be paid let's say yesterday. I was starting to get foreclosure notices, utility shut off notices in the mail, just barely keeping my head above water.

I applied for a personal loan from one ot the many high interest rate companies. The interest rate on the loan was so high, it would be embarassing to give you the figure, let's just say that I had no choice. It was so bad, I looked at my wife and basically told her I wasn't going to sign the paperwork but I did.

Well I fell behind in the payments due to an unforseen household emergency ( the story of my life). I made payments here and there, always late never on time, and the company was calling me on a regular basis. Then one day I read a newspaper article stating that this company was having a hard time and lost a great deal of money.

A week later a collection representative called me and offered to re-structure my loan at a 7% interest rate is that unbelieveble or what? She told me she would send me some necessary paperwork to get it started. I didn't see any paperwork and I didn't hear from her in about a week. So of course another collection rep from the company called me, I basically told him that I wasn't doing anything until the lady called me back. He asked me to hold for a couple minutes and he came back with a 5% interest rate offer, needless to say he was the man.

Now remember that I did not contact this company to ask for a lower interest rate, they just thought it would be in their best interest to restructure the loan.

So gather your credit card and financial loan paperwork, pick a day that you can sit down and call those 1-800 nmbers and negotiate for a lower intrest rate. If you find out that they are not willing to provide you with a better deal look into a personal loan that you can pay these off at a better intrest rate.It only costs you your time and could save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars. You are in the Captains chair, remember this saved money can possibly be used for things other than paying credit cards, loans and other bills . Good Luck and look out for Saving Money Part 3 Online Shopping.

Share Your Family Recipes

Family Recipes and Cookbooks are something you and your family value especially as it has been passed down generation to generation.

You can always taste good food all of the time, but in the back of your mind you'll say something like, those pancakes were good but they didn't taste like Aunt Ada's pancakes.

You eat a delicious slice of pound cake, but in the back of your mind you can only think of Aunt Olivia's pound cake.

Of course you have tried to watch as your family members prepared these foods but were never able to duplicate the taste without the actual recipe or the one on one lesson from the master cook.

Aunt Ada's pancakes were thin with crispy edges and always buttered to perfection served with pork link sausages. She would place them on the table stacked high, with warmed syrup, then you would ask her "when are you going to eat?" her response was always "I made those for you I already ate". Then I would eat pancakes until I passed out.

My Aunt Olivia's pound cake is the most delicious thing you could ever taste. I mean when my Aunt Olivia shows up to a family function of course we asked her "how are you doing?", but we were really asking "did you bring the pound cake?". There could be a whole table of bakery purchased cakes and pies and none of them could compare to her pound cake. It's so good that my mom actually tries to hide it from me or offer me some other type of cake (that's a shame).

I believe that all Family Cookbooks and Recipes are a way of continiuing family traditions. We all know that weddings, anniversaries, family reunions, and even funerals can get family and friends together.

These events are far and in between, as good food can bring people together in a moments notice. All my mother-in-law Mackie has to say is "I'm gonna fry some chicken" and we're off to her house. My uncle will bring chicken from New Jersey just for her to cook.

Now the real question is how do we save and preserve these recipes? Let's be truthful, some family recipes are passed down and some will be taken for a lack of better words to the grave.

With some recipes or relatives you wouldn't have the courage to ask for them, but if you don't ask you will never know. Let the recipe trustee know that the family enjoys and holds this recipe close to their hearts and considers this recipe as a family tradition. Maybe they could put this recipe in a special place which it can be obtained when they are no longer able to cook or have gone to a better place.

Family recipes and cookbooks are meant to be shared and enjoyed by all. Just like int the movie Soul Food, food was a sharing of love. So get your family cooks together and share your love of Family Recipes before it's too late.

Make Your Life Easier, Start a Pantry to Save Time and Money

Start a pantry because a well stocked kitchen pantry and is the trademark of an organized kitchen. It is important for every home to have a reserve of regularly used food items, sundries and a few special items on hand to welcome surprise guests. What is the main purpose of creating and keeping a pantry? You want to make sure that after you start a pantry, that it is stocked properly and regularly, which will reduce stress and save money.

It’s important to always have those items on hand that are necessary for your family‘s needs. For example, if it is properly stocked, you won’t run out of toilet paper, paper towels, flour, sugar, or other staple items.

Also, if for some reason an illness, job loss or natural disaster occurs, a well maintained stock level enables a family to continue eating and living well despite their circumstances. How does someone start a pantry? There is a standard: if you have an item that is open, there is one back up on the shelf. It’s a good idea to have at least a three-day supply of both food items and hygiene supplies to provide for your family plus at least one extra person.

Always use the FIFO method: First In, First Out. When you purchase new items, rotate the older items to the front to be used first. If you are a planner and prefer to have more supplies on hand, it would be wise to include substitutes for fresh foods. Examples might include powdered milk, protein products, dried fruits and dried vegetables. These items might simply save a trip to the grocery store if you accidentally run out of a fresh item, which means you have saved time and money! Only purchase what you and your family will actually use and eat. Money will only be wasted if you purchase items no one eats and extra time will be taken with cleaning out all of the unused items. Each household is in a different stage of life and their items will reflect those differences.

For example, those families with young children might want to start a pantry with cold cereal, diapers, wipes, pretzels, crackers, and canned ravioli in their storage area. Homemakers who are dedicated to baking and creating meals from scratch might have plenty of flour, sugar, baking powder, chocolate chips, dried buttermilk, and oatmeal on their shelves. There are also items that older couples might use.

Fast Food Facts and Trends

One Fast Food Fact is that fast food is a part of daily life for many. It's not always by choice but a convienient option in the fast paced world we live in.

Fast Food definition - is food that can be purchased and served quickly. While any meal with low preparation time can be considered fast food such as TV dinners, typically the term refers to food which is cooked in bulk in advance, kept warm and sold from an outlet. Outlets may be stands or kiosks, which may provide no shelter or seating, or fast food restaurants(also known as quick service restaurants.)

This was a regular option for my family for awhile, after my wife and I worked all day being pretty tired and all we had to do was mention take-out to the kids and we instantly became the best parents in the world.

When you think of fast food the first thing that comes to your mind are all of the major U.S. franchise corporations like McDonalds,Burger King,Wendy's,KFC, and many more.
Another Fast Food Fact there's a twist when it comes to living in a largely populated city like Philadelhia, as the number of these types of businesses are multiplied.

What I mean is that in a 4 block radius of my home there are not any major Franchises but there are Mom and Pop operations like Chinese take out,Pizza Shops,Philly Cheesteak and Hoagie shops and it seems that every corner store has a deli area in the back of the store.
One thing I know for sure is that eating these types of food along with the soda or beer to help wash it down definitely puts the weight on.

You've seen the fast food fact articles and tv cooking shows that tell you that a certain hamburger or sandwich can account for the majority of the suggested calorie intake for the entire day.

Before we get into the calories just look at a few Fast Food Facts.
Oklahoma City,OK has been the breeding ground for Fast Food franchises because of cheap land and uncongested traffic.
There are over 300,000 fast food locations in the U.S.
It was projected in 2006 that Fast Food business would reach 143 billion dollars in sales.
When it comes to this type of food you have to be concerned with your calorie, cholesterol, and fat intake which isn't always pretty. Always keep in mind that the suggested calorie intake for men is 2,600 calories and women 2,000 calories a day to maintain your desired weight.
Fast Food Fact about Calories,Cholesterol, and Fat
McDonalds Big Mac 600 calories/ 85 mg cholesterol / 32 grams of fat
McDonalds Supersize French Fries 610 calories/ 0 mg cholesterol / 29 grams of fat
Dominos Pizza 4 slices of sausage and pepporoni and a 16 oz soda 1000 calories/ 62mg cholesterol / 28 grams of fat
The economy is pretty rough right now along with a son in college has made us tighten our wallet and purse, and the take out adventures are far and between (thank goodness we didn't have an adjustable mortgage).
But we still like the taste of fast food so I am going to purchase one of those copycat restaurant recipe books and make my own take out and casual dining dishes as I know that I will save a considerable amount of money.

Cake Storage

Cake storage is important as we also know that cakes and pies do not last long as far as freshness goes, the frosting gets a little crunchy and if you keep the cake too long the color of the cake starts to change colors (UGGHH).

Here are a few suggested storage times for Cakes, Pastries, and Pies at room temperature or refrigerated 33-40 degrees F.

Cakes Room Temperature 2-4 days
Doughnuts Room Temperature 4-5 days
The Famous Fruit Cake Refrigerated 2-3 months
Pie and Pastries Refrigerated 3 days
Pie and Pastries Cream filled Refrigerated 2-3 days

Wax paper and aluminum foil seem to be the most inexpensive way to cover and transport your delicious masterpiece to another location. But we all know that the condition it arrives to the party or special occasion could be a lot to be desired, as you watch people trying to be the first in line to lick the aluminum foil or wax paper.

Have you ever delivered a cake that leans to one side? Or constantly go over to your cake to adjust the aluminum foil to keep the flies and bees off of it. We know that a cake container found in the diners that sits on the counter would be let’s say a little unpractical.

Wouldn’t you like a cake storage container that you can use to keep your cake fresher longer?

Wouldn’t you like a cake storage container that would not mess up your beautiful masterpiece?

Wouldn’t you like a cake storage container that you could hand to your child without a worry to carry from the car?

Well all you have to do is surf the net or get in your car and travel to your local mall. I'll provide you with a short cut as there are all sorts of products that will save you time (licking the icing off of the aluminum foil) or just saving the embarassing moment as you uncover your delightful dessert at the party. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!

History of Organic Food

Farming practices used before the 1900's are classed as organic. It was only after this that added chemicals such as urea and DDT were brought into farming - previous to this, farmers didn't have the knowledge and simply put, were happy enough with things as they were; as most of us today would be. After all, home grown food is often the nicest, most tasty food we put on our plates.

For some reason, during the 1960's and 1970's the concept of organic food became a separate entity to the 'normal' food we were then buying. Consumers had been effectively duped into believing that what they were buying, was food as nature intended, it not appreciating that the chemicals which were added during growth of the 'normal stuff' were what actually made the food abnormal in the first place.

Rachel Carson, a prominent writer, biologist and ecologist established public awareness of these issues via 'Silent Spring', a book she wrote which basically brought about major controversy on the use of agricultural chemicals and synthetic pesticides in particular. As a direct result of this book, and the growing concern over the use of farm chemicals which consumers were suddenly more aware of, chemical regulation procedures were put into place, and when the demand for organically grown food rose, so did the need for further regulatory procedures to cut down on the ecologically destructive and toxic chemicals.

Today, organic food is finally reaching an all time high of acceptance from consumers, so its demand is increasing - more 'organically acceptable' agricultural procedures are gaining momentum, and it seems even though it is more expensive than chemically treated foodstuffs, it is healthier, and it is that health factor which is winning the battle against chemically treated consumables.

A creation of a whole new set of ideas about organic standards which first came into debate in 1990, took over ten years to refine to relative perfection, and they will still evolve as new practices come into force. It is by these standards now that, organic food and other products such as wool in the USA is grown/gathered.

All of this though begs the questions - why can't farmers just grow food without chemicals at all, why does it need regulation, and why were chemicals introduced into grown food and other consumables in the first place; I think you already know the answer though, and that's money.
In this modern technological age where farmers are in direct competition between each other to gain the bigger contracts of the supermarkets and other food retailers, they have to be cheap.

They simply can't grow the vegetables (for example) as fast as the grocery store can sell them, so they have to resort to other methods to keep up, or did do at least until the consumers voice began to ring out strong and true.

Organic food is no longer a small niche in the food desires of Americans; it is becoming what everyone wants. Everyone now wants and feels the need to eat in a more healthy fashion with the onset of so many new medical conditions which prove costly as it is; a little more expense to eat something grown without strong use of chemicals (which could 'theoretically' make it worse) might mean a saving health-wise instead.

The organic food trend of today is growing ever-stronger, and not just for vegetables even though at one point organic purchases totalled over 40% of all organic buys. Meat and fish which is organically produced is still at the lowest of all food purchases, but is moving up the chain too. Dairy, bread and grain, beverages and snacks are all becoming more and more popular.

Today there are more Organic supermarkets popping up everywhere, sometimes in certain areas more than others - almost as though people in one state are more 'organic' than others but on the whole it is more of a blanket change than just a few people trying to eat in a healthier way, the amount of people eating organically is far more substantial than most realize. Suddenly people have more choice, and this is obviously because the demand is there. The world is finally going organic, and with any luck the bigger grocery store chains will have to meet this demand, rather than flood the market with low-cost chemically treated alternatives.
