Interesting Culinary Arts Facts

There are a number of interesting facts about culinary arts that many people may not be aware of even if they are members of the culinary arts industry themselves. Culinary arts are relatively new previously things were done by taste and recipes were passed down from either master to apprentice or parent to child.

There was no formalized training for culinary arts. That changed in America when the Boston Cooking School opened. While this did not seem incredibly noteworthy in and of itself it did produce a student who revolutionized cooking with her cooking in 1896 which presented the importance of measuring and following a recipe accurately when it came to ingredients her name was Fannie Farmer and her work is still in publication today.

The need for formalized information with regards to cooking became needed and 1929 saw the founding of the American Culinary Federation. One of the other interesting facts about culinary arts is the fact that the first televised broadcasts of a cooking show began in 1946 with James Beard. 1946 also saw the first formal institution for people interested in becoming chefs it was named rather originally as the Culinary Institute of America.

The culinary scene was relatively quiet until the 1960s when Julia Child entered the scene with her 1963 show French Chef. She quickly became an industry standard and her works are still considered as such to this day.

Just about everyone has heard of Johnson and Wales University one of the other interesting facts about culinary arts is that its college opened in 1973, it also became the largest food service educator in the US and it was the first to offer a BS in culinary arts starting in 1993.

Before the opening of the Culinary Institute of American Cooking careers where accomplished through apprenticeship programs with that in mind The American Culinary Federation Educational Institute with the help of government funding began in 1976 incorporating apprenticeship programs in order to create the opportunity for on the job training.

It does not stop there the culinary arts field has taken off and schools offering programs became officially recognized with the ACEFI began its accrediting commission in 1986 and was officially listed by the Department of Education in 1990 currently there are approximately 90 schools which maintain accreditations in culinary arts.

People who go to culinary arts programs do not just become chefs. Culinary arts is more than just cooking that is one of the interesting facts about culinary arts, it incorporates a wide range of things.

In fact, culinary programs usually provide classes in business and restaurant management. This is important because culinary arts being one of the fastest growing sectors is seeing a lot of changes. People do not just want meals they want a variety that constantly changes and they want it quickly while still having it be nutritious. This is why culinary arts programs are also adding nutritional classes as well as classes on presentation. Culinary arts does not just about taste good, it is about looking good too.

Another one of the interesting facts about culinary arts is that not only does it not only deal with food, and food presentation, restaurant management, financing and even standard Human resource skills you will also learn about wines, different cuisines, and how to set a table.

In cooking, timing is everything and making sure that your food comes out when it is suppose to the way it is suppose to be something that amazes many people when it comes to interesting facts about culinary arts.

Culinary arts is no longer just, what you learned from your parents. It is no longer just what you put together a pinch of this and a pat of that. It is an entire culture revolving around the creation of excellent food. Nutrition is important and as the saying goes, many people eat with their eyes so presentation is a must. Many times chefs either own their own restaurants these days or they are in charge all the kitchen finances.

This means that you can not just learn about cooking when you learn about culinary arts. There are plenty of interesting facts about culinary arts that can amaze you. You may be surprised at how new it is, or how much is involved. Cooking is more than just throwing ingredients in a pan and letting it cook. There are many other aspects that go into presenting not only a healthy dish but one that looks good as well.

Fish Storage and Good Fish Safety Practices

Fish storage is important whether you have brought fish home from a great day out on the water or you have simply purchased fish that comes already scaled and gutted, you'll find that storage and fish safety are two very important things that you need to worry about.

Good fish storage in your home is instrumental towards making sure that your fish stays ready to eat and safe to eat, so make sure that you are taking the precautions that you need to keep in mind. It is important to realize that different situations call for different types of care, and by simply keeping a few things in mind that you will be able to ensure that your fish is enjoyable for anyone who might care to eat it.

First, take a look at the rules for fresh fish storage. You will find that by taking fresh fish back home to a refrigerated environment is instrumental towards making sure that it maintains its quality. When you are dealing with fresh fish, remember that the sooner that you eat it, the better it will taste. When you get the fresh fish home, make sure that you remove it from the store wrapping. Then wipe the surface with a damp cloth to remove any debris, and if they fish is whole, you might want to wash it with cool water and then pat it dry.

Then, it should be wrapped in wax paper and then placed in a container that has a air tight-fitting lid. When it comes to fish safety, make sure that you keep it in temperatures that are at most 34-36 degrees Fahrenheit or 1-2 degrees Celsius. If you will not be eating the fish immediately, freeze it as soon as possible.

Keep in mind that when it comes to fish safety that storing it frozen is high recommended. You'll find that when you freeze fish, you are not only preparing it for storage, you are also making sure that possible harmful bacteria are being killed off as well as preventing it from spoiling. Make sure that you when you buy fish that you are already starting off with fresh catches and high-quality merchandise; these are the fish that will retain the best flavor and form when you freeze them.

When you are looking to freeze your fish, start by cleaning, washing and wiping down the fish as soon as possible after it has caught. In order to freeze large fish, it is appropriately done in stages. You will take a tray and then dip the fish in ice water before placing it in the freezer. Repeat this several times to maximize the protective layer of ice that it will acquire. Smaller fish are simpler; you can do it in the exact same fashion as you did the larger fish, or you can place them in a pan that you cover with ice water and then freeze. This makes a block of ice that you can simply remove and store.

When you are looking towards preserving fish fillets or steaks, you'll find that fish storage gets slightly more complex. You can prepare a brine solution that is composed of four cups of water and three tablespoons of pickling salt and then dip the fillets into it for twenty seconds. This can keep the flesh of the fillets firm while making sure that you preserve the natural flavor. If at all possible, wrap the pieces up as separately as possible.

An important part of fish storage is how long it can be done for. Luckily, we can keep fish a great deal longer than ancestors could, but that does not mean that we can keep frozen fish indefinitely. You'll find that when it comes to fish safety that you can keep lean fish for 6 months, while medium fat fish can only be kept for about 4 months. Fish that are rich in fat should only be kept for two months before being thrown away. This is why many people will date the fish that they store in order to make sure that the fish that they thaw out is still good.

Finally, make sure that when you are ready to prepare the fish that you think about how to thaw it. Some processes like poaching, barbecuing in foil or steaming do not require thawing, while frying or broiling most definitely does. In the interests of good fish safety, remember to use different utensils for cooked fish than raw fish, and remembering to keep prepared fish at consistent temperatures if it is being transported.

Happy Mothers Day from Food Storage Info

Happy Mothers Day to all of you Caring, Loving, and Teaching Mothers.  Even at the age of
47 every once in a while I just call my Mother and thank her for all that she has taught me.

At work I deal with young people and I check out how they communicate, if they have manners, and how they carry themselves when dealing with total strangers.  It always isn't a pretty experience but then you look back on your childhood and all those times you thought it was just your Mother nagging again, it was just her way of preparing you for the World.

We would like to thank all of the Nagging Mothers who are what we may call strict or over protective for these Mothers help keep children out of the juvenile justice system or jail.  Thanks to those Mothers who encourage their kids to do well in school. Thanks to the Mothers that not only are concerned for their children but their childrens friends and children in the neighborhood.

To Eat or Not Too Eat, Don't take a chance Keep A Food Storage Resource Close By

Food Storage Times vary depending on what type of food you are referring to ie. Meat,Poultry,Fruit,Vegetables,Grains, etc.

For years I tried to determine the freshness or if you will the not so freshness of a food by its look or smell.  But wouldn't be easier or more practical if you had a resource or reference for this information. So if there was a question mark in your mind if something should be eaten or thrown away it could be easily accessed or answered.

Oh yes I have been fooled by smelling milk thinking it was sour as some of the milk had accumulated around the spout or cap giving a slightly spoiled odor, later to see my son eating a bowl of cereal  saying " it tasted fine"
Sometimes food storage times can be extended by the food storage technique or product you use.

This might be a stupid question but do you think that cereals, grains, and rice would last longer in the original retail package or an airtight sealed container or canister?

Do you believe that the Food Manufacturers want your food to last well beyond the normal shelf life in order to save you money. I don't think so as they are given guidelines by the FDA or trying to keep up with their competition. It's something like that chewing gum commercial where the gums flavor lasts so long no ones buying it(Yea Right).

Food Storage Times should be strictly adhered to for certain foods because they could cause severe illness or diseases. There are certain foods that I would never take a chance on such Fish, Poultry,Pork, and Eggs. I could probably get away with a little moldy bread but not moldy fish.

We do not copy information of Food Storge Charts by using excel software and changing the order of information. We would prefer just to let you connect with College and Governmental websites with this information. Here are some Food Storage Charts for you to use. (I would not be able to link all of these websites in my blog, so please go to the link below to use these charts).

Hopefully, these valuable resources will be helpful to you and pass them on to that familly member or friend who doesn't understand some foods don't last forever.

Don't let Your Knowledge of the Metric System ruin Your Recipe

Understanding Metric Symbols and a having a Metric Conversion Calculator will help to insure your recipes always turn out the way you intended them to.

I vividly remember the metric measurement conversion lessons being taught to me in Junior High School (they call it Middle School now). The only thing on my mind at that time was girls and "why don't you let me get the cups, pints, pounds and inches thing together first." Like with any major change I was reluctant to learn basically due to laziness.

I was able to get through this subject without too much of a problem as the change (converting to the metric system) that my teachers referred to did not happen too quickly or didn't effect me immediately. But as I browse the grocery aisles many years later I've noticed the metric symbols on the food packaging. You know what I mean liter, milliliter, grams, and on and on. It's a little sad but the first metric measurement as an adult that I was familiar with was for soda (chaser) 1 liter and alcoholic beverages 750 ml (that's like a fifth).

I definitely could not sit here and explain the formula for turning ounces into metric volume but here is a
Metric Conversion Calculator provided by EngNetGlobal.com (check bottom of page).

Hopefully this information will be of some assistance to You and Your delicious Recipes.

We're back and ready to share some great Food Storage, Food Safety, and Food Health related info. We have been looking at Jaime Oliver's Food Revolution and listening to First Lady Michelle Obama and their concern with Childhood Obesity.

With all of the peer pressure that your kids face on a daily basis in the classroom there are some things that can be controlled and one those of things would be weight control. No one says that it is easy but with proper nutrition and excercise it is possible.

You can monitor your kids when they're at home but you have no clue as to what's going on in School. If you start sending your kids to school with their Lunch and Snacks you insure that they are Healthy and not Fattening. Try slowly to add these 22 Healthy Lunch Snacks into your School Lunch Menu and have your kids take a video game break by sending them outside for some excercise and see what happens.
